“How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life.”

Plagiarism………. it’s a beautiful thing :)
Have you guys read/heard about this book?? It’s written by some Desi chick from Harvard. She signed multi-million dollar contract to publish 2 books when she was 17. After her first novel is released…it turns out that she copied little parts from two different novels.
Now the publisher has taken the book off the shelves :(

I personally think that’s stupid and the book should still be for sale. Its not like she copied the whole freaking story?

What do you guys think? What if someone took a little part from lab work and made millions…remember just a little part and now the whole thing..

Oh……….Spuri in case you are wondering…the book is not DARAAWANI :)

below is the link to her story

    That is just …. hmmmm!!!
Wow!! i read the link and dude!there is quite some similarity in the passage. Kinda shows its not her thought process.. hmmmmmmm

well i guess she is no longer gonna make a real career in writing. Any idea what’s Harvard doing about it? the book might still sell thanks to the publicity (no such thing as a bad publicity!!!) …

  5. Shana Says:

    i agree with sangi.
checked out the amazon link to the book and there were some really autrocious comments about this situation. dunno if really all these people got to read the book. any idea of how long it was on stand?
similar situation (also mentioned in the reviews) was another book ‘A million little pieces’ by James Frey. Not sure if you guys heard about this book or has anyone read this book?

Check out the statement on Harvard Crimson published on April 24, 2006

  7. Piper Says:

    Shana,
yes, oprah got into the James Frey thing.. and then took his case on live TV…. this was in Jan i think.. Mahn.. was that bad!

Opal Mehta is a painful thing for the author mahn… uska total career ka lag gaya..

But again.. int eh US.. wont it be a great story if she can come back with a kickass oprah-backed novel with ‘learnings from failure’ type theme!! I bet $50 that its goign to happen.
    :)

  8. Shana Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised at all. But the best turn of events would be if the publisher does decide to bring the book back on the stands and it becomes a best seller and mayb into Oprah’s Book club ;)

About James Frye… yeah i watched that … it was bad but i guess she had to do it and apologise to the public for the fone call she made to back him up earlier on (before it was confirmed) on larry kings show.

  9. Piper Says:

truth.. i watched Larry King when she made the call.. very very surprising!!!

She tore into him on the show a few weeks later though!! it was damn funny…

  10. Abhi Says:

Why is Oprah Book Club so Famous??

  11. Kbird Says:

Now, Kaavya Viswanathan is highly qualified to make indian movies…
